BRITISH FILM INSTITUTE - A NEW BUILDING

The new British Film Insitute occupies a space on the South Bank of the River Thames which has served as a centre of cultural activity in London for over half a century. Recent developments across the Southbank emphasise commerce as a means to support the cultural programme, but the new BFI brings a pause to this commercialisation of the river front by turning ther focus of the building, its entrance and public spaces away from the river front and onto Jubilee Gardens to the south. The building itself can be read as a series of seperate volumes connected by decks, walkways and roof. In this it matches the language of the nearby National Theatre and Southbank Centre - functional volumes and interconnecting planes. The programme interally is split over three floors, with the cinemas on the top level, raised over an open foyer, allowing cinema-goers the opportunity to journey up into the darkness of the audiutorium and the glow of the screen.THE CASS / UNIT 2 TUTOR - TONY FRETTON
